used to go to this school, they expelled me for trying to stand up for myself after 2 years of bullying from other students, teachers were not helpful and were rude to students and did not believe anything i said about the bullying

After a long road involving a move from our neighborhood elementary to a charter through a pandemic, we finally landed at BCK8 in August of 2021. Now we have an honor roll eighth grader graduating this year and a GT-IEP seventh grader who has found the support AND circle of friends he needed to succeed academically. No school is perfect. Not all schools are meant for every family or child. But I wish we had chosen BCK8 years ago. We’ve had some hiccups, both from our end and the school, but overall we have been pleased and impressed. Their music and athletic programs are strong. The teachers are no nonsense because the culture there is firm belief that all students can succeed and so that is the expectation. Our son never really loved school until coming here. Our daughter adapts easily so it’s been nothing but good for her. Giving three stars rounded to 3.5 because we have experienced some unprofessional moments and the current principal is leaving so we don’t know the future. We have one more year here with one student, so hopefully things stay safe and challenging.

I went to this school for 9 years. I never had a major issue with the teachings or anything like that. There was a lack of emotional support for students that didn't explicitly say they were in need of it. I was bullied one year, and instead of supporting me through it, counciling turned it back around one me because one of my friends had called the other person a mean name (I was in 5th grade and had never been taught how to properly deal with this kind of stuff). One of the paras (assisants is the best description for them) was extremely rude to me for no reason throughout my 4th grade year. She would constantly yell at me and said some things to me that I have yet to forget about. Some teachers cared more than others, and I was lucky to get the teachers that cared. I made a real connection with some of my teachers, but other teachers were better forgotten. I wouldn't recommend a child to go here, as there are a lot of shortcomings that this school has. The environment is not inclusive at all, and staff really doesn't care if someone is being bullied unless it could harm the reputation of the school itself.

The grading scale for middle school is too tough. A 92% is a B and a 82% is a C that’s too extreme for middle school. The amount of homework for kids is crazy. Research shows homework does not improve test scores, yet they give hours of homework every day. It’s hard to have after school activities when so much time is dedicated to homework.

GreatSchools Ratings are based on student performance on state tests, progress over time, and college readiness, in addition to how effectively schools serve students from different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average). Ratings and reviews help parents compare schools. We encourage parents to also visit schools, ask questions, learn about programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. Data provided by © 2025. All rights reserved.
