Somerville Middle School Ratings & Reviews

We moved to Somerville from a much larger school district four years ago. My two oldest children attended and graduated from different schools, but my two youngest have had experiences in all three Somerville schools. Every middle school will have challenges, mainly due to the age group of the students. It is a difficult age to navigate, as I have four children myself. I feel that the work load has been fair and the teachers are doing a good job keeping my current middle school child engaged. Also, while the school does not offer as many extracurriculars and alternative elective classes, it provides enough. I have been very impressed with the music program so far, and it is really nice to see how many children play and instrument while also participating in sports. That was something I didn't see much of in my previous town. I think this allows for a well rounded student who can form friendships in various groups. I feel the reviews that have been negative stem from someone who has never attended another middle school, or a parent who has not had the experience of multiple schools. Overall, it has been a positive experience for me and my children.

Faculty and staff truly care about the students. High level of enthusiasm and spirit. This age group is an extremely difficult one and I believe your child's success starts at home and their academic success cannot be based on parent opinion sites such as these. The true measure of any child's academic accomplishments cannot be measured by an opinion based site where parents/students rarely ever praise and only leave negative feedback. This school honestly has exceeded my expectations above and beyond what I ever expected.

There was a teacher who falsified grades, and im pretty sure shes still there. we were out into 2 English classes in 6th grade, which was not needed. Some teachers never completely taught the course or didn't teach it right. The principal hardly helped the students at all. There are so many problem withthis school im surprised its not closed.

GreatSchools Ratings are based on student performance on state tests, progress over time, and college readiness, in addition to how effectively schools serve students from different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average). Ratings and reviews help parents compare schools. We encourage parents to also visit schools, ask questions, learn about programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. Data provided by © 2025. All rights reserved.
